Women Don't Owe You Pretty by Florence Given

A basic introduction to feminism with nothing new to say

Rating: 2 boring stars

Women Don’t Owe You Pretty is a collection of essays on various topics such as dating, self-love, toxic relationships, and gossip culture. It’s been marketed as an introduction to feminism. I must agree with this sentiment as it is very much an introduction. There isn’t anything particularly ground-breaking about this book. It mentions things you have already heard before. It’s an easy fast read, but I don’t think I came away from this book with any real deep thoughts about feminism, hence, my low rating.

Each chapter is also interspersed with artwork, which provides a nice distraction from the boring way it is written. Even though the book is written by Given, there isn’t much of Given in the book. I don’t see her unique perspective or any personal stories that elevate the essays. I also found the style of writing to be lacking punch. It feels more like a lecture. And at times it is also colloquial, but not in a good way. She over uses the word “hun”. I also felt that some of the essays were very patronising.

Given spends a lot of time quoting other people and using their ideas, which begs the question of why it was even written in the first place. It’s just an amalgamation of other people’s ideas. She also frequently talks about women of colour, despite not belonging to that community herself.

Overall, a very superficial look into feminism, which may suit those who are new to it. But if you’re looking for a hard-hitting deep dive into the intricacies of the patriarchy we live in, then do yourself a favour and avoid reading this one.

Most Memorable Quote:

“Men are invited to these events [award shows] to win a trophy - not become one.”
